Changde, a city of critical importance for military defense, can't esoape from the covetous eyes of the invading Japanese army. In October 1943, two branches of Japanese army, started from Shashi city and Yueyang city, respectively crossed Yangze River and Xiang River and besieged Changde city, which was then defended by the 74 Nationalist Army Division 57. Upholding the order to "live or die with the town"; Coriander Yu Chengwan expected a final battle without way back. All the residents had evacuated from Changde. Even before the war started, the soldiers were doomed. It was incredible to the Japanese army that the unconquerable city was defended by just less than a hundred soldiers.
